Durango is an active town with many festivals such as Snowdown, the Chocolate Festival, and the Iron Horse Bicycle Race from Durango to Silverton. The Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is the country's only coal and steam powered train operating daily. It travels up the Animas river valley, winding through rugged mountains and valley floors with sweeping vistas to reach the historic town of Silverton. In addition, Durango Mountain Resort (formerly known as Purgatory) is a popular skiing destination.

Bayfield and Ignacio are small towns that have their own special charm: the Heritage Days Festival, a huge fourth of July celebration, and the Sky Ute Museum and Casino. The Ignacio Bike Week Rally is held each Labor Day with more than 25,000 motorcycle enthusiasts attending.
